“The gospel for him equals the doctrine of penal-substitutionary atonement… Jesus said that the gospel was ‘the Kingdom of God is at hand.’ Shouldn’t we let Jesus tell us what the gospel is?” (>>) [MP3]

Surprise surprise, McLaren jabs at penal substitution.
… as if penal substition didn’t have anything to do with the establishment of the kingdom???
Hasn’t he read the rest of the New Testament?
Jesus said that if we receive his apostles, we receive him. If we reject his apostles, we reject him.
2 Corinthians 5
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Aaron, did you actually listen to what he said, or did you just look at the filename and think, “Oh, it’s McLaren…”
A few sentance earlier he said:
“I believe penal-substitutionary atonement is an important demension of the gospel, but I don’t believe it is the gospel.”
